This design-build project is for the replacement of the structurally deficient Darden Memorial Bridge on Route 35 over the Nottoway River. [Fay Southeast]’s project scope includes the demolition of the existing bridge, the design and construction of a new two-lane 900' bridge with roadway approaches, grading, right of way acquisition, drainage features, permitting, storm water management, signing and pavement markings, erosion and sediment control, and utility relocations.

The new bridge will address numerous issues. In addition to replacing the deteriorating structure, which had restrictive weight limits, motorists will be safer as the roadway will be widened to accommodate 12' lanes and 8' shoulders. The larger structure will also better support a usage rate that is expected to grow from the current 3,400 vehicles per day previously traveling over it to just over 4,500 vehicles per day by 2036.

[Fay Southeast] coordinated with utility companies to disconnect utilities found in the area prior to the demolition of the existing bridge. In addition, a temporary bridge was constructed to allow personnel to perform demolition activities from the river.

The new bridge is expected to be completed in the fall of 2015 and ahead of the initial projected schedule.
